cover Avenged Sevenfold
Nightmare
Warner Bros.Following the death of Avenged Sevenfold drummer James ?The Reverend? Sullivan in 2009, the band marched on, enlisting the help of Sullivan?s drumming hero, Dream Theater?s Mike Portnoy, for their fifth studio album Nightmare. Luckily, the sound of the band remains unchanged, and as one of the best drummers in the business, Portnoy picks up the reigns and rides the Deathbat’s double kick in complete synchronicity with Gates, Christ, and Vengeance.

cover Betty and the Werewolves
Teatime Favourites
Damaged GoodsAttention casting directors! Are you looking for a band to provide music for the Talulah Gosh story? Look no further than Betty and the Werewolves. This U.K. foursome has the sound down. Just like the heroes of C-86, they?ve got clattering, super-charged punk tempos, careening guitar riffs, witty, snarky, and heartsick lyrics, sugar-sweet vocals that overlap and tumble into tricky harmonies, and the magical ability to make twee pop sound like the most exciting music on earth for two-and-a-half minutes at a time.

 Alternative/Indie Rock, Indie Rock
cover Menomena
Mines
Barsuk RecordsDrifting between order and disarray, Menomena?s fourth album is like an exercise in controlled chaos. While Menomena are still working in layers of fractured harmony, Mines feels like one of their more focused efforts to date. Given the density of the songs here, reining themselves in couldn?t have been a small feat, and the album probably owes a lot to its relatively downtempo feeling.

cover Mark Olson
Many Colored Kite
RykodiscMark Olson’s first proper solo album, 2007′s The Salvation Blues, was written and recorded in the wake of a powerfully traumatic romantic breakup, and as beautiful as it often was, the pain that inspired it was never far from the surface. Following a collaboration with his former partner in the Jayhawks, Gary Louris (2008′s Ready for the Flood), Many Colored Kite finds Olson making music on his own again, and though these songs appear to be the work of a stronger and happier man, this remains a deeply introspective set of songs, with a keenly spiritual undertow running through these meditations on love, nature, and humanity.

cover Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble
Couldn’t Stand the Weather
EpicStevie Ray Vaughan’s second album, Couldn’t Stand the Weather, pretty much did everything a second album should do: it confirmed that the acclaimed debut was no fluke, while matching, if not bettering, the sales of its predecessor, thereby cementing Vaughan’s status as a giant of modern blues. So why does it feel like a letdown? Perhaps because it simply offers more of the same, all the while relying heavily on covers.
