Taylor Swift

To say Taylor Swift had a remarkable year would be a comic understatement. She sold more albums than any artist not named Michael Jackson. Her first headlining tour, Fearless 2009, sold out every show within minutes. She became the youngest woman to win the Country Music Assn.’s entertainer of the year award, and she set seemingly every chart record that exists. But most important, she proved herself a graceful, timeless celebrity, handling hosting duties on “Saturday Night Live” and a rampaging Kanye West at the MTV Video Music Awards with equal aplomb. We caught up with her on the phone from London to discuss her exhilarating last 12 months.

Completing the trifecta of the big three categories, Beyonce topped the nominations for the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards, with 10 total nods, including Album of the Year for “I Am…Sasha Fierce,” Record of the Year for “Halo” and Song of the Year for “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It).”

Taylor Swift also received nominations in the top three categories: Album of the Year for “Fearless,” and Record of the Year and Song of the Year, alongside co-writer Liz Rose,  for “You Belong With Me” en route to a  total of eight nominations. The Black Eyed Peas, Maxwell and Kanye West each received six nominations. In a surprising omission, Whitney Houston received no nominations for her highly rated comeback ‘I Look To You.”

“I’ve been throwing out my trash and buying my milk and living in basic obscurity,” Maxwell said of his nominations, which came after an eight-year hiatus from recording music. “I feel like I’ve already won. I’m grateful beyond words…but I won’t be going away anymore.”

The Album of the Year nominees are Beyonce’s “I Am…Sasha Fierce,” the Black Eyed Peas’ “The E.N.D.,” Lady Gaga‘s “The Fame,” Dave Matthews Band‘s “Big Whiskey and the Groogrux King” and Taylor Swift‘s “Fearless.”

The Record of the Year nominees are Beyonce’s “Halo,” the Black Eyed Peas’ “I Gotta Feeling,” Kings of Leon’s “Use Somebody,” Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face” and Taylor Swift’s “You Belong With Me.”

Song of the Year nominees are “Poker Face” by songwriters Lady Gaga & RedOne, “Pretty Wings” by Hod David & Musze, “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)” by Thaddis Harrell, Beyonce Knowles, Terius Nash & Christopher Stewart, “Use Somebody” by Caleb, Jared, Matthew and Nathan Followill and “You Belong With Me” by Liz Rose & Taylor Swift.

Kings of Leon drummer Nathan Followill said the band was thrilled to received seven nominations over two years for their album “Only By the Night” and said they don’t anticipate touring anymore for the album “unless we win four Grammys this year, then we’ll be back.”

The Song of the Year nominees seemed to correlate very much with chart success in 2009; all of the songs nominated in the category reached the Top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100; four of the songs peaked in the top four of the chart.

Up for Best new Artist are a diverse group of acts that includes country group the Zac Brown Band, R&B singer Keri Hilson, dance-pop duo The Ting Tings and alternative bands MGMT and Silversun Pickups.

In the top genre categories, the Black Eyed Peas, Bon Jovi, The Fray, Daryl Hall & John Oates and MGMT were nominated for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.

The Best Rock Album nominees are “Black Ice” by AC/DC, “Live From Madison Square Garden” by Eric Clapton & Steve Winwood, “21st Century Breakdown” by Green Day, “Big Whiskey and the Groogrux King” by the Dave Matthews Band and “No Line on the Horizon” by U2.

Best Rap Solo Performance nominees are Drake for “Best I Ever Had,” Eminem for “Beautiful,” Jay-Z for “D.O.A. (Death of Autotune),” Kid Cudi for “Day ‘N’ Nite” and Mos Def for “Casa Bey.” After the nominations show, Drake said he’s still working on the album, with an anticipated release date of March.

Best Country Performance by a duo or group with vocals are Brooks & Dunn, Zac Brown Band, Lady Antebellum, Rascal Flatts and Sugarland. “I think it’s exciting for country music right now, she’s brought a lot of young people into the genre,” Sugarland lead singer Jennifer Nettles said of Taylor Swift. “When I was 20 years I was playing clubs and learning how to drink Jim Beam and Coke. Very different.”

As ever, there were a couple offbeat nominations among the 109 categories nominated for the 52nd Grammy Awards; Johnny Depp, for instance, is nominated in the category of Best Album Notes, alongside Douglas Brinkley, for “Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson – Music From The Film.”

The complete list of nominees can be found at Grammy.com.

The “Grammy Nominations Concert Live!! – Countdown To Music’s Biggest Night” featured performances by the Black Eyed Peas, Sugarland, Nick Jonas & The Administration and Maxwell.  Presenters included George Lopez, Linkin Park, Katy Perry, T-Pain, Dwight Yoakam, Smokey Robinson and Ringo Starr. LL Cool J hosted the show and opened the evening with a rap that included lyrical references to the top songs of the year.

In order to qualify for a Grammy  nomination this year, the eligibility period for releases was from Oct. 1, 2008 – Aug. 31, 2009 — one month shorter than the typical eligibility period. According to the Recording Academy, this change was done to accommodate an earlier Grammy Awards show during the awards-heavy first few months of the year. The 52nd Grammy Awards will be held on Jan. 31 and telecast on CBS.

“The world is pretty fluid, so things happen in any given year you might not expect,” said Neil Portnow, President and CEO of the Recording Academy. “There were a number of events stacking up…and we felt this was a better night. Next year will be another year, another set of circumstances.”

This was the second year major Grammy nominations were unveiled on a primetime television special; last year the telecast earned 7.15 million viewers, according to the Nielsen Company.

Grammy Nominations Poll Results

So how did Billboard’s predictions – and our readers’ votes – stack up against the actual Grammy Awards 2010 nominees?

Aside from a bombardment from Tokio Hotel fans — who delivered nearly 40,000 votes in each of the three major categories for a band and a record that were not eligible for the 2010 Grammys — the gap between our picks, your votes and the actual nominations isn’t very large at all.

Listen to some of the songs and artists that are nominated for 2010 Grammy Awards.

RECORD OF THE YEAR
Readers’ Poll Results:

Lady Gaga – “Poker Face” (4738 votes)
Kings of Leon – “Use Somebody” (840 votes)
Taylor Swift – “You Belong With Me” (748 votes)
Jonas Brothers – “Paranoid” (602 votes)
Jay-Z feat. Rihanna and Kanye West – “Run This Town” (516 votes)
(Tokio Hotel – “Automatic”  got 35,725 votes but was released in September and is not eligible until 2011)

Our readers were rewarded in this category, with the top three choices voted upon making the final cut. But while the Jonas Brothers may have made the top of our poll, they were shut out entirely for this year’s awards. Meanwhile, Jay-Z, Rihanna and Kanye West may not be up for record of the year, but fan favorite “Run This Town” is in contention for  best rap/sung collaboration.

ALBUM OF THE YEAR
Readers’ Poll Results:
Lady Gaga – “The Fame” (4955 votes)
Green Day – “21st Century Breakdown” (1584 votes)
Cinema Bizzare – “Toyz” (1221 votes)
Taylor Swift – “Fearless” (1110 votes)
Susan Boyle – “I Dreamed A Dream” (875 votes, but not eligible until 2011)
Whitney Houston – “I Look To You” (865 votes)
Jonas Brothers – “Lines, Vines, and Trying Times” (787 votes)
(Tokio Hotel – “Humanoid” (41,004 votes, but was released in October and is not eligible until 2011)

Billboard.com did slightly worse in the album of the year, going only 2-for-5 by picking Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift for this category. But a bizarre contender on the poll was the German goth rock band Cinema Bizarre who did not register anywhere in this year’s nominations. More surprisingly are the complete shut-outs of both Whitney Houston and the Jonas Brothers for any and all categories.
BEST NEW ARTIST

Readers’ Poll Results:

Tokio Hotel (38,850 votes, ineligible)
Lady Gaga (7654 votes, ineligible)
Cinema Bizzarre (1391 votes)
Owl City (684 votes)
Jonas Brothers (663 votes, ineligible)
Susan Boyle (321 votes, ineligible)
Zac Brown Band (186 votes)
Demi Lovato (151 votes)

Billboard.com readers didn’t do nearly as well in their votes for best new artist category: of the top eight vote-getters, half of the chosen artists weren’t even eligible for the category. 2010 is either too early or too late, folks. Of the four legitimate candidates the got a notable number of votes in our poll, only one – the Zac Brown Band – actually made the cut.

As for the rest of our own predictions…

We knew exactly what we were doing when we named Beyonce as Billboard’s Woman of the Year. She certainly lived up to the title of Sasha Fierce, leading the pack of Grammy nominees with a total of ten.

We were pretty sure that U2 would return to the 2010 Grammy Awards with some nominations in hand after debuting its single on the previous year’s broadcast, and we were right. U2 was nominated for three Grammys: Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals, Best Rock Song and Best Rock Album.

Bono and co. will have to contended with Green Day on their quest for another Grammy. As we correctly guessed, the Bay Area pop-punk band’s return after taking home the Record of the Year award in 2006. Green Day is nominated three times, in the same categories as U2.

Allen Toussaint didn’t get the Album of the Year nod like we thought, but will still likely leave the Grammys a winner.  He’s nominated for Best Jazz Instrumental Album, Individual or Group.

Just like Billboard.com readers, we thought Whitney Houston was a shoe-in for multiple Grammy nominations for her much-hearlded – and much-loved – return to music “I Look To You.” Instead, the Grammy voters delivered what may be the greatest snub of all.

Phoenix weren’t eligible for Best New Artist, but we aren’t surprised they were noticed: the French pop band is nominated for Best Alternative Music Album.

We predicted that Maxwell was a strong contender for multiple Grammy nominations, and we were right on the money. The R&B singer’s return to form earned him six Grammy nominations.

We also said that the the question isn’t if – but how many Grammy Awards Taylor Swift will win. Its still an open question as she’s nominated for eight Grammys.

There’s no time for Black Eyed Peas fatigue on 2010. The rap group dominated the charts for most of this year, and as we predicated, are nominated for six Grammys.
